About the MPR Gemsbok Hunt

Gemsboks’ native habitat can be found in Southwest Africa, but you can experience the best in gemsbok hunting here in Texas. A large antelope featuring a beautiful gray coat and black and white head markings, and with long straight ringed horns, the gemsbok is well-suited for trophy hunts year-round. There are no seasonal restrictions on such Texas exotic hunts.

Large and aggressive, the gemsbok antelope can weight up to 660 pounds, with a horn size up to 39 inches (older game might have 40-inch+ horns). The horns of bulls tend to be relatively shorter and thicker. Cows tend to have longer, thinner horns. This antelope has even been observed fighting off lions and, in medieval England, their horns were often sold as unicorn horns.

In fact, female trophies are more sought-after than male trophies. Gemsbok are among the few species in which this is true. Able to self-regulate their body temperature, the species can survive with little or no water.

When hunting a gemsbok antelope, you might hear their familiar groans, which sound like burping. During rut, bucks often show signs of physical wear, such as limping and premature aging; in fact, many die in fights during mating season. The antelope has a recognizable sloping back, a heavily built chest and shoulders, and black and white stripes and bands on the back, flanks, throat, upper legs, and rump.

The gemsbok is the perfect addition to your Texas exotic hunting experience. Book guided hunts in Texas or set out on your own.
