About the MPR Eland Hunt

The eland's native habitat can be found in South, East, and Central Africa. In fact, the eland tolerates the African climate quite well and has been domesticated and farmed in South Africa as an alternative to cattle. Now you don’t have to travel to Africa. At Montgomery Properties Ranch, you can go eland hunting in Texas and embark on exciting trophy hunts any time of year. Our Texas hunting ranch offers an exciting array of services to make hunting eland antelope an unforgettable experience.

The largest of the antelope family, this African game species looks more like a bull and features spiral horns. It can weigh anywhere from 1,300 to 2,100 pounds. An eland’s horns can be 26 to 43 inches long. Some animals have brighter stripes and markings on their legs and spine. Elands have a smooth coat except for a rough mane, while males have a darker, bluish-gray coat and females are tanner.

Able to run up to 25 miles per hour, elands are the slowest antelopes, but they have the unique ability to jump over eight feet high when startled. Young animals can jump nearly ten feet in the air, allowing them to clear high fences. Eland hunting can be a challenge. If you are patient, you can succeed, especially given fast-moving elands tire out easily.

The eland is also great at water conservation. It can raise its body temperature by up to 13.5°F on a hot day, which helps it keep in moisture. Hunting is aided by the distinct sound made when the animal walks. An eland’s hooves make a clicking sound; so, if you’re quiet, you can hear it coming and prepare for your shot.

At Montgomery Properties Ranch, you can go eland hunting in Texas and take one of several approaches. Try the spot and stalk method, hunt safari style, or sit in a blind. Our exotic game ranch in Texas is ideal for eland antelope hunting. To learn more about our hunting packages and ask about eland hunting prices, contact us today.
