About the MPR Dama Gazelle Hunt

The dama gazelle is the largest species of gazelle. Dama gazelles are diurnal, so they can be found gathering, feeding, and moving about in the daytime. Although they can survive long periods of drought, dama gazelle need more water than other desert creatures and will perish from a lack of water. In their native Africa—dama gazelle reside in the Sahara desert and Sahel—populations are in decline due to habitat loss, overhunting, and diseases introduced by cattle. However, you’ll find plenty of them at Montgomery Properties Ranch in Texas.

Dama gazelle hunting packages are now available at a favored Texas hunting ranch. The dama gazelle is characterized by its white back end, with a variable brown to reddish-brown color of rump, and slightly curved (lyre) horns about 12 to 15 inches long. Females have much shorter horns than males. Dama gazelles are recognized by their relatively small heads with narrow muzzles, large eyes, and long necks. They stand up to 47 inches tall at the shoulder and can weigh up to 165 pounds.

Long legs add surface area to the dama gazelle’s body. By dissipating heat, this extra surface area enables the animals to survive in the hot desert and stay cool. Tracking them is possible by finding the dung, urine, and glandular secretions used to mark their territories.

Dama survive well on our exotic game ranch in Texas but are quick to alert one another of danger. They are always on alert. When danger is detected, dama gazelles warn their herd by hopping up and down on all four legs at a time—a behavior known as pronking. The window of opportunity may be narrow, but successful trophy hunts are possible by being patient.

Dama gazelle hunting in Texas can be an exciting and rewarding experience. At Montgomery Properties Ranch, we offer several approaches to hunting this African game. Hide out in a blind, use a spot and stalk approach, or hunt safari style.
